Goin to 4.56's! Any advice??
Well guys Ive got my engine built and a new clutch in now the weakest link is going to be those God awful stock 3.42's. I talked to a shop who said they would put my gears in for $150 (Im clueless about shimming gears) and I found a set of Richmond excels online and an install kit for around $200. I've also got the crosspin that's notched out in the middle. Other than some gear oil, the additive for the posi is there anything else I need? Any advice? Just want to make sure I do this right the first time!! Thanks in advanced for all of yalls help, idk where I'd be without y'all!

On 4.56's that poor pinion is so damn thin. Behind a 6spd its just waiting to be sheared of its little teeth. I'd stick with 3.42's till you can afford a quailty rear be it a 12 bolt, 9in or dana.

Thanks so much for the feed back guys! Well to be honest obviously I'd love to get a ford 9" but just having dropped around 3500 on the engine on a high school budget
I'm wishin in one hand and sh***** in the other. I haven't looked into how much a ford 9" or something like that would cost but I'm not expecting It to be cheap.. Is there anything else I could do? I like the 4.56s though because with a 6 speed and 28" tires I feel like that puts me in a good rpm range. But I do hear y'all loud and clear-that's asking for trouble

Keep in mind that I started with a 8.5" 10-bolt, but I went with 3.73s in my car, and have been very happy with that RPM range (2000 RPM @ 80 in 6th, smooth take offs from the line, solid acceleration if I drive like a hooligan). I have 25.5" tires in my car. From what I've read, a gear set in that area for a 7.5 10-bolt is still plenty strong. Food for thought.

thats definetly a good thought! i appreciate the feedback. I've done some more research with this new insight and i found out two things. 1) as far as i can tell you'd be hard pressed to get a 12 bolt, 9" etc. for under $1800 and i dont have anything like that kind of money and it would be a long long time before i did. matter of fact i just got my new clutch in last night so moneys very tight. 2) ive read that for a few hundred extra dollars you can build the stock ten bolt to hold enough power for a H/C car (correct me if im wrong please) with new axles main bolt stud kit welding the axle tubes and other things. if i could do that to just get by that would be great. does anyone have any experience with built ten bolts or at least know someone who did it? keep in mind this car probably wont see the strip but once maybe.

I'll sell you the 4.56's out of my 10 bolt when I get it out of storage lol. They came with the car. Way too much gear for me. HP tuners wouldn't even let me put in the gear ratio of 4.56's (98 computer) so we had to futs with the numbers until it actually worked. I've had no problems with them though. Driven a couple thousand miles on them. However I just put on some steamrollers so I don't expect the rear end to last long with them so they will be coming out for 3.73's or 4.10s.
If you really want 4.56s I'll gladly sell them to you
