Default Rebuild 10 or Get a 12?

I just picked up a 69 Camaro with a modded LS1. The car made 400hp at the wheels on the dyno. It has a T56 and a 8.2" 10 bolt in the rear (not original) with 3.73's. I don't know what axles but I think an eaton posi possibly. It has 1 tire fire pretty badly.

I was told by the rear end specialist that he would just put in a new eaton posi. He said he could rebuild this one but there could be other issues with the posi that he would recommend just getting a new one. He could do that and get 4.10's (which I'd like since I have the .5 final gear) for $1500 all in. He said if it has stock 28 spline axles he could upgrade those for an additional $600.

My other option that I was thinking about is purchasing a 12 bolt from moser. It looks to be about $3000 assembled plus freight and install so lets say $4000. If I went his route would c-clip 30 spline axles be enough for go with the bolt in 33 spline?

These prices are all Canadian if they seem high. Lets assume hp numbers will only go up form here if I decide to add a power adder or something bigger later down the road. The car currently has multi leaf spring setup in the back. Any suggestions on the route that I take? Thanks

Itd be 33 spline no c clip axles in a 12 bolt if I had the budget. Heres a similar build for reference though this is a strange housing.

If you got the cash go 12/9"/60.

If your on a budget then fix the 8.2.

I have the cash but there are always other things I can spend the money on.

How well do the 8.2" 10 bolts normally hold up? Would they be okay for 4-500hp or should I be expecting it to blow in a few years taking that route?

With 4-500hp should I be running 28, 30 or 33 spline axles?

Once I have this fixed and wheel hop sorted out I do plan on taking it to the track with some drag radials which I know adds to the stress

You should be able to pick up a 12 bolt for much cheaper than 4k for that car.

Depends on traction and use really. If it's only going to be on normal street tires no worries. My brother in law put a fully rebuilt 10 bolt in his HCI 355 (420hp at the motor) 68 Camaro years and years ago, hasnt touched it since. Car is in storage now but spent years not being treated gently at all. But he was rocking regular BFG's. These are a lot better than the 7.5's that we are all afraid of.

The OP is discussing the GM 8.2 10 bolt, not the GM 7.5 10 bolt.

I know, that was my point. The 8.2's are not the same scary toothpicks that the 7.5's are

I should be able to get you into a complete assembled Strange 12 bolt for under 3000 shipped with 33 spline axles and HD posi. I wouldn't spend 1500 on a old 8.2 if you can get into a much better rearend for a little more. You should be able to install a complete new rearend yourself with a little help.
