Default gears? 3.73, 3.90, 4.10, oh my

I picked up a set of 325/45-17 drag radials on a 17x11 rim and put on my 02 B4C Camaro, LS1 M6. The top end is amazing with these tires but the car is really a dog till I get above 2K rpms. I don't have the money to upgrade the axle, so I'm just going to get a set of Motive Performance ring and pinion gears. My dream is to put 4.10s in the car but I've read that they inherently are not as strong as 3.73s. Will the 3.90 Motive performance gears give me that happy medium of more torque production than the 3.73s but more strength than the 4.10s. Either way I'm going to change the gears, I'd like to run the 3.90s but will run a 3.73 to keep from breaking stuff as easy with the 10 bolt.

I say they are all near equal in strength. More then likely if you break one you probably would have broken any of them.

Current mods are just k&n intake, cat back exhaust, and custom tune. Soon coming mods are 160* t-stat, headers, cam, plus more to come

Forgot to mention my B4C Camaro has 3.23 gears since it was a former police interceptor.

Honestly you'll be ok for a while. If you dump the clutch at a track, you're skating on thin ice.

As long as you don't abuse it, you'll be ok.

4.11's in a 7.5 10 bolt have a tiny pinion gear and a really thin ring gear.

390's share pinion gear with 373's , so 390's may be a good choice for you

Sounds like you answered your own question. Go with 3.90s. You'll definitely feel a difference.

Ok, thanks. Sounds like 3.90s is what I'll be getting.

Well I want the 4.10 but want the physical strength of the 3.73 since I'm using the 10 bolt. But if the 3.90 is as strong as the 3.73, that's what I'm going with. Thanks.

Whatever gear you choose, just slip the clutch a little bit on the launch. Don't be reckless and dump it at 6k. That's when stuff breaks. Have fun and enjoy it!

You will at the very least want to put a new differential in it before swapping gears. My 10 bolt completely stock lasted about 10k miles with the horsepower I have now and a few soft launches at the track. With the new gears, you are going to get wheel hop like a mf, which is known to take 10 bolts out the first time.

I always say run it until it breaks, but if it's your daily driver, that might not be the best option.

It's more of a weekend car, not a daily driver. Will hardly ever see the track.

I'd personally go with 3.90s then.. 4.10s are really short and the only reason I have them is for the track and of course for occasional 40 rolls

I have 4.10's in my 10 bolt and an M6, but it's a weekend car that I don't launch at the track. Just playing around on the road I won't launch it above 2k and even then it's rare because I don't want to leave a pile of metal behind me. I try to be easy on it to make it last. I love the 4.10's though. Whenever I blow the 10 bolt the next rear (9 inch, S60, etc) will also have 4.10's.

Dumb question, but is that wheel hop comment true of the Barbie 10-bolt in particular or is it a general "all rear ends wheel hop with taller gears" comment?

I had wheel hop in my 10 bolt and used to in my Moser 9 inch. Lower control arms with relocation brackets will usually fix this problem.

Not a dumb question at all.. with the taller gears, it is easier to lose traction and when you have a sticky tire on there with a prepped track, it's very easy to get bad wheel hop.

Quick Reply: gears? 3.73, 3.90, 4.10, oh my
