what is the difference between 3-channel and 4-channel Abs?

3-channel has a single rear pickup and that is for a
reluctor ring on the diff carrier. 4-channel has 2 rear
pickups and tge reluctors are at the axle ends. The
4-channel is neccessary for traction control.

so if you don't have traction control, you have 3 channel? or not necessarily?

That's correct. Because measuring speed off one wheel is not going to be useful.
