Question Howling Noise from 45-25 deceleration! What's wrong?

Still have the 10-bolt, the spider gears got chewed up so I went with a Auburn Pro Series Limited Slip Differential with my same 4.10 gears. We installed it ourselves to save money, but why is there a howling noise? It bothers me, but it might be okay because I raced with it like that and nothing tore up. We have to use a spacer and shims to get it where there is barely any play. Any inteligent insight would be appreciated.

It needs to have a certain amount of play in it, it's called backlash. Did you measure it with a dial indicator gauge when you set it up?

Yes, there is not too much play or not enough. I think this part is fine.

What did the backlash measure out to be?

What did you torque the differential caps down to?

Are the carrier bearings installed correctly?

Unless you measured it, its not fine. When mine went the whine was the pinion bearing. It was rebuilt with all new bearings and 373's were installed. No trouble since. It really doesnt sound like you measured backlash. Maybe you did, but most back yard mechs dont have dial indicators. Maybe you do and followed all the correct steps. Did you replace all the bearings?

We took it to a friends' shop and had it measured. I have since decided to get rid of this thing over the weekend and buy a Moser. Tired of messin' with it! (We never got new bearings, but we did have trouble with the shims.) I don't think we want to do rear-ends every day-they are a little more complicated than the engine. Thanks!!

When the spider gears chew up the debris goes right into the oil channel that feeds the pinion bearings. My guess is that the pinion bearings are full of garbage.
By the sounds of the first posts "spacer and shims" I got the impression it was refering to an aftermarket pinion spacer with adjustment shims.
