Going from 2.73 to 3.42, Need Help!
I'm installing a 3.42 in my stripper car in the next few weeks. The 3.42 came out of a 6spd car, so if I just buy an install kit and bearings I should be set for the install, right??? Also, until I can get the computer programmed to compensate for the gear, what can I expect to act up on the car, I know the MPH will be off, but what about ABS, and Shift Points. -Thanks-

Not entirely sure about the computer question, but you will need a ring gear spacer from Motive or anybody else that makes them. You're going with gears from a 3 series carrier and putting them into a 2 if you didn't already know that.

Speed Inc sells the spacer. The only thing that you'll realy notice is the speedo being off. I went from 2.73s to 3.42s in my old Z and the only the that needed corrected was the speedo

no i'm not in the 11's anymore.... that was in my orange car that i sold.
this car i have not been back to the track yet. i think traction is going to be a problem for me. but low 12's shouldn't be a problem if i can get traction.

As for the spacer, you definately will. No question about it. The 6spd guys are wrong, and here is why. From 2.73s to 3.08s, the differential is a 2 series carrier, from 3.23 on up, it is a 3 series. 6sp cars came factory with the 3 series so that's what they are used to.
So you have a set of gears from a 3 series differential and need to install them. Here are your options, best to worse.
Get a 12 bolt rear (not a cheap option)
Find a used axle with 3.42's installed (easy swap)
Get a new 3 series diff and install those 3.42 gears
Sell the 3.42 gears, and get a set of thick 3.42's made specifically for 2 series carriers. (going this option, you could also go up to 3.73's)
Get the spacer. (Worst option, spacers are more notorious for whining, causing bolt fatigue, and just are generally not as good of a solution).

The spacer isn't as bad as it may seem. My Z ran numerous 6.80s @ 100+ cutting low 1.50 sixty foot times with a ring gear spacer. It was sprayed right off the line and never had a single problem with the rearend. That same unit is now in my buddies S-10 and it's still going strong.
