Default rearend issue?

So the other night I was our crusin around and I downshifted to 2nd at about 50 and stepped on it and it broke loose but there was a pretty loud clacking/clicking noise that seemed to be coming from the rear? Any Ideas what this could be? Hopefully its nothing too serious cause I don't wanna rebuild it again but don't have the funds yet for a 12 bolt.

I know when I broke my rear, it started a definite clack clack.

Don't mean to rain on your parade... but I'm willing to bet you'll find a chunk of pinion laying in the bottom of the case. These 7.5"s don't hold up well to an LS1 w/M6. Especially with any mods.

If you're low on cash... I've heard of people that pull old 8.5" 10 bolts and have everything welded up to fit a 4th gen, and whalah... you've got a strong rear end for less than $1k. Hearsay often says those 10 bolts were stronger than the 12 bolts. Don't take my word for it though, I'm no expert. I'm just an expert at breaking 7.5"s.

We should really have a poll on this one... pinion chunks, ring chunks, or ring and pinion chunky soup?

hmmm well this isn't the response I wanna hear, I'm sick of blowing money on this shitty rearend. It seems fine sometimes but other times it will do this. When I'm driving its always fine unless the tires break loose and then this happens but not all the time?

well I finally took the car to a shop and the guy seems to believe that there is nothing wrong with the rearend. He drove it and actually put it in neutral and shut the car off to hear any abnormal sounds coming from the rear and there was nothing, but I'm pretty sure he didn't try to spin the tires or get on it that hard cause thats when the noise/feeling occurs. He's pulling the cover off the differential tomorrow to inspect it but he seemed pretty confident that there was nothing wrong. So now I don't know what to think? Any other guesses? It almost feels like wheel hop, maybe with the sticky tires and recently lowering causes wheel hop, but I wouldn't think with a live axle I would get this especially on wet roads, I would expect more tire spin with stiffer springs?

A bad U-joint would sound like that. Did you notice any leaking around the diff?

Yes there is leaking around the differential. I called this morning to see if he found anything out but hes been busy and he did take it for another drive though to drive it harder to see if he heard any noise. He says "jeez its really strange you can almost feel it on the pedal." So I asked him "Did you take the traction control off?, and he says "ohhhh.....how do I do that?" So after wasting another day we'll see if he finds anything wrong today.

Well, I'm just throwing this one out there. If the pinion seal is bad and leaking, you might of burnt up the clutches in the diff... Just a thought.... Interested to find out what the problem is.

Well they couldn't find anything wrong with the rearend, but I had a couple of friends ride with me after I got my car tuned and the intake on. They seem to think that its just wheel hop. The one friend has a gto so he knows all about wheel hop. Now it will do it in second gear because the car seems to pull much harder with the intake and tune. I've read on here that changing the ride height of your car can cause this so I guess its time for suspension mods?

Make sure the guy who took it apart put the pinion nut on tight as possible cant be stressed enough, pinion seals will breaks prettty easily then whole rearend starts going away(my current situation), pain in the *** dealing with bonehead mechanics. Wish i had the resources to do it myself. stock 10 bolts are just a time bomb, get the money for a 9in and stop throwing money in the rearend

the clunk could just be the soft rubber bushings holding it in place.
