Default Stock rearend noise

I'm running the stock rear in my 01 TA and it's making kind of a funny noise. I'm pretty sure it's coming from there anyway. Is it common for pinion bearings to go bad? The best way to describe the noise (forgive me for sounding stupid) is that it just goes ROW ROW ROW ROW all the time. It's been doing it for a while now.

does it do it to you when you punch it from a stop or is it just random?

Maybe you have a kayaker in your rear end?

Actually, I evicted the kayaker last week, but the noise didn't go away!

I think it's fairly constant. But then again, I couldn't really tell you for sure because it's not loud enough to hear it when I punch it over my exhaust. Hence, I notice it most when I'm coasting or driving slowly.

I had the same issue about 2 years ago and it turned out to be bad axle bearings. The axles were all pitted up so I had to replace them along with all the other bearings in the rearend. Good luck to you!

i think the noise i am experiencing is only because or traction control being on and launching it at a low or no speed. is this possible? any other time i launch the car nothing happens. when im going 10 or higher no noises

My car doesn't have traction control, but any I've driven, I never really noticed a noise from it.

Well, to update this thread for anyone searching who has this problem, I bought a rear end bearing kit and replaced them all. All the bearing were worn, but by far the worst was one of the carrier bearings. It had pits all over almost every roller. Here's a crappy picture of it. But, the important thing is that the noise is now GONE! WOOHOO!

Thanks to anyone who posted on this thread to help me find the problem.

sounds like you have some bearings going out. that's what my car sounded like when my pinion bearings started going. dont waste your money on gears though just get a junkyard rear. cheapest and easiest out in this situation.

Wow, that is exactly the sound my rearend has made since I bought the car 2 years and about 7,000 miles ago.

Romp, romp, romp, romp is what mine sounds like. It is the same on the gas, coasting and braking and is constant with speed.

I was told with no one actually looking into the rear that it sounds like the pinion bearing. I'm going to tear into it this weekend..

You did yours yourself right? I'm going to buy a bearing separator and read up as much as possible about getting the pinion bearing set right.. That is what has me most worried about trying this.

You just used the same shims and everything right?

What seemed to be the hardest part for you?

Thanks
Tom
