You would have to check your area, but I know they are pretty flat rate depending on size. I shipped a trunk from Philly to Chicago for $40.
http://www.shipgreyhound.com/ You might have to have them ship from the closest greyhound shipping location.
They also have a max of 100lbs.

Ive used Greyhound but I think that will be too heavy also.
I think your best bet is to get the seller to ship it truck freight like from a business with a loading dock to a business with a loading dock that you can get to accept it. I see engines , big truck tires , lots of bulky items on trucks at jobs I have had.
you can get cars shipped to most parts of the country for under a grand , find one of those carriers and have them pick up your item and secure it under the "overhang" of a vehicle on a carrier , it wont limit the amount of cars they can haul on the carrier so anything like that is gravy...
when I was in the boat business I had trucks come in to pick up boats I was shipping that had everything from farm equipment , cars , industrial items etc.. mixed cargo. Where I currently work there is one customer that comes in with an 18 wheeler loaded with repairable cars going to Canada just to pick up a couple boxes of our products the size a car rim would fit in and toss them in the trunk of one of the cars - someone got creative with shipping !
