Newbie question re 416 stroker & 317 heads
I'm new to LS power and was wondering if anyone has ever run a LQ4 that has been stroked to 416 and utilized 317 heads??? if so how much power was made?? or what issues would this combo have??
Or on the flip side would it be better to spend on a set of LS3 heads/cam swap on a stock LQ4 bottom end?? if so what would the results generally yield there??
This is a one or the other type approach,, stroke or do heads/cam as I have the opportunity to manage both at the same cost given a friends help....

The stroker would be more fun to drive because it would make killer low end torque, you'd only have around 9-9.5:1 compression with the LS3 heads on a stock LQ4, add that to there large intake ports and a large cam and you'll have no low end torque and wont be much fun to drive. I would only consider the LS3 heads on a LQ4 if it was going in front of a auto trans with a 4000+rpm stall converter.
Also I'd built a 408 not a 416, a 416 has to long of a stroke and it causes piston side loading and wears the pistons and bores out much faster.

What do you think a person would lose (HP/TQR) using the 317 heads with a 408 combo? and I'm assuming the piston (with fly cuts) could be chosen to suit the application that would yield say 11.2 to 11.5 to one with a LSA/cam profile that would allow 93 octane pump gas....
Anyone else with thoughts on this too gang?

I'd guess 50+hp, at this point you may want to contact some sponsors and talk your options over with them. A budget 370 with stock LS3 heads may be something you may also want to consider.
