inputs needed before pulling a 5.3 from junk yard
Im very much familiar with swapping motor on supras and dsm. But i figured its the same with any.
ill be pulling a truck 5.3 which should have plenty of room. for a fast pull. but I wont have air tool for a "quick" job.
how ever looking for advice from anyone who pulled one before from a junkyard. looks like the place has one of those tower looking puller. using chains.
anything special that i need to bring?
im pretty confident i can pull one myself but just looking for anything i should keep in mind or watch out for.
The only factor I have is lack of time and unknown tools that ill need.
in my garage i have everything for sure but in junk yard all ill have is what i think Ill need.
heres what im planning.
since all i need is a long block plans are as follows.
1. look for truck that has enough damage to be totaled by insurance. and low miles if possible. check for any good or bad signs on the engine. but since fluid will be drained all i can check for is leaks?
2. drop the trans first (or is it easier to pull trans and engine on truck?)
3. pull the engine(should be straight up with no trans
4. strip the accessory (since im using everything ls1 in my transam 98)
5. pull the pans-check for rod bearing failure sign or movement.
6. pull the heads and see if gasket is blown / check for cylinder wall damage.
for 5 and 6.
is this worth the effort?
im planning on boosting it to 550-550whp and ive read i can make that on bone stock. id hate to rip it apart if its capable on stock
thats about it right?
for those wondering why im swapping an ls1 to 5.3. I spun a rod bearing today and since im planning turbo anyways 5.3 is the perfect candidate.
