Car hesitates to turn on and wont shift

Car hesitates to turn on and wont shift hello, I have a 1999 Formula LS1 4 speed auto
I was driving home to day and the car just turned off while I was exiting on to the feeder from the highway. when i attempted to turn it back on it started but died immediately after, on my second attempt it started back up and ran fine. but it will not go faster than about 30 and if I do attempt to go faster it seems like it wants to turn off. When I come to a stop it will die if it is in drive. When is it in park it will idle like normal. Is this a tranny issue? I have no SES light on. In desperate need of some direction here the car is my daily driver and I need to have it up and running ASAP.
