I clean my engine/bay using a solution of Simple Green and water (50/50). I squirt it onto a slightly warm engine (making sure to wrap my air filters and fuse boxes in plastic), let is soak in for a minute and scrb anything that looks dirty using any variety of brushes and rags. I then rinse it down with a garden hose ensuring not to blast anything too hard. After that I drag out my leaf blower and dry off anything that looks wet. To finish it off, I spray down the engine bay with foaming tire shine and wipe it down after is soaks in for a few minutes.
I've used the above procedure on 5 different cars and I've never had a problem with anything.
Things I would not recommend:
- Using a pressure washer
- Spraying down a hot engine (parts tend to crack)
- Spraying water directly onto the alternator, fuse box or PCM

I would never use high pressure to wash the engine bay. Ever.
There is no need to run the engine right afterward. I usually let it sit for a few hours, never caused a problem.
