Lean bank 1 and 2 codes (P0171, p0174)
Argghhhhh! Today I took the car out for a ride and didn't realize I was low on gas, So of all things I run out of gas. I then have someone come bring gas to me and I have no idea if they brought me premium gas or regular or what not but am thankful because I think that is what the problem was. So after filling up the tank with the 5 gallons I was brought the car seems to be running rough almost like it is missing but no codes are being thrown. After a few minutes and revving the engine a few times it starts to idle back to normal. So then I begin the 40 mile drive back home all the while home the car doesn't want to rev up at all and when I would try and push it in any gear the car seemed like it was fuel cutting out. So once home I replaced the fuel filter thinking that was it. Nope still running crappy. I then go to the gas station get a bottle of STP fuel treatment and top the tank off with 94 octane. The car now runs better but now it is throwing the P0171 and 0174 codes. It takes two good cranks to get the car started once started the car idles fine. With the engine off and turning the key forward to put some pressure in the fuel rails nothing trickles out all you hear is what sounds like air rushing out of the line no fuel at all. Even with the key left in the on position you get shorts spurts of gas running out nothing steady. Anyone with any idea where to start or what the problem is? Thank you in advance for all your help.

I had the same codes it is not your gas. Look on the passenger side by intake the rubber hose that goes in to intake on pass side. If it is loose or cracked, air is gettin inthere and it is not being metered by the system.
Solution go to auto parts store get approprate hose size and install.

But that doesn't account for the low fuel pressure does it? Even with the key turned forward I should have good pressure coming from the pump when the car isn't running and I don't.

When I had the car tuned at NewEra Performance Mike told me that there was an issue with the fuel system as he was calling for 120% fuel to the rails to even get a good tune on it told me it could be a fuel filter or pump going out slowly on me.

No I really do appreciate your input and I will be sure to check it. Just was curious about the fuel pressure part is all. I am open to hearing anything. But if it is the pump I will be doing the access panel mod as dropping the tank does not sound like all that much fun. Especially if that may not turn out to be what is wrong.

Have you checked your fuel filter? If it is clogged you will get the low fuel pressures. You might also try performing a fuel volume test. Get a fuel pressure gauge with a valve that will open the fuel through a different line to check fuel volume. If the car dies it is definately a fuel pump if fuel filter checks good. Hope this helps.

If you were already having fuel pressure issues, then most likely it is your fuel pump going out. It is not good at all to run your tank out of gas because the gas actually keeps the fuel pump cool when it surrounds it so when you run out the pump can get too hot and burn up. It doesn't take much especially on an old pump. Go to Autozone or similar and rent the fuel pressure gauge and see exactly what numbers you are getting.

With key just turned forward in on position there is about 22-24 psi. With the car running at idle there is about 20 psi. When you give it a rev drops down to about 5 psi. I am voting on pump as the filter was just changed.

She starts real hard lol. But I will be doing the trap door or access panel mod whatever you would like to call it. So it shouldn't be all that bad I see there are a few write ups on here about it. And it seems very common place to do so.

my first guess is actually a fuel pressure regulator. Unhook the vacuum hoses and see if there is any fuel in it. if there is, it is bad. A fuel pump isnt going to work, not work, work, and not work... you might have two issues.... Also check the vaccum hose on the regulator for leaks.. that hose having cracks in it will explain the lean codes AND the low fuel pressure!
