Default Gas Gauge Stuck on Empty

Hey guys,

This has happened to me 3 or 4 times now.. it seemed like it would always randomly start working again. The other day I took a sharp turn, looked down, and the gas gauge dropped all the way to empty. It's stuck there now.

Any time this has ever happened to me, it would sit in the same spot on empty. It seems like any bumps or jerks of the car cause this to happen.

Is this a known issue or just my car? I tried hitting the gas tank several times and got nothing.. It's a 99 by the way.

Thanks everyone

Make sure you get this one. TECHRON Concentrate Fuel System Cleaner

advance auto alway sell buy 1 get 1 free, and oreilly and autozone, check their site ad before head to the store.

after you get tank empty after running that stuff, go to walmart and buy a gallon of marvel mystery oil and add 4oz every 10 gallon of fuel and it will keep your fuel injector, pump lube and clean.

I hope those pix help to make sure you get right stuff.

That's exactly the stuff I bought. I just gotta watch my miles now so I can "GUESS" when my tank is low.. then I'll add the stuff in.

I have put in a racetronix kit in my 98 over a year ago, the tank was perfectly clean. Yesterday I fixed my gauge, it was working but would stick when less than a quarter or a tank, I bet the sending unit(potentiometer) In the tank has worn out, it has contacts that move as the float moves, mine were broke off but I was able to bend them back, you may be able to do the same or if you can't you can always replace it, I think it's about 150 though. I'm not positive, but it sounds like your problem. The contacts have play in them and since yours is 11 years old it has probably worn out so it loses conection from time to time...

High sulfer content in the fuel can damage the contacts on the sending unit. So if you are using cheap gas it might be time to change the sending unit.

Any idea on what to expect from the dealer to repair this issue? I tried two bottles of the fuel cleaner and it didn't work. Is the sender part of the fuel pump? Should I have the entire assembly replaced? How much should this all cost. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide!!! The dealer is supposed to call me tomorrow.

I'd guess the dealer will charge 8-900 bucks. You can get the whole module from racetronix and do it yourself for less than 200.

Thanks for the response Jimmy. The vehicle is already at the dealer awaiting diagnosis. Is the sender part of the fuel pump assembly? Will/should I have to replace the entire thing? Thanks!

I don't think the dealer will replace just the fuel level sender. I don't think they have a part number for the sender alone. They will likely quote you the entire module, which includes the pump, level sender, pressure regulator, all in a new housing.

If it turns out to be the level sender you could replace just that part by getting it from racetronix. I highly doubt the dealer or any shop would install a part you supplied so you would have to find someone to do it for you(if you can't do it yourself). It would be the same labor and not much more money to replace the entire module and at the age of your pump it would be cheap insurance.
