Why did my battery melt?
Brand new optima 2 weeks old. I put fresh plugs in the car and took it for a spin. Laid into it in first gear and it got to 6800 rpm and the car completely shut off. The battery was leaking solder and smoking and the positive cable was fried. Any help or ideas are appreciated.
Car has zero power and no lights or anything work. The tach is stuck at 7000rpm. F*CK!

get it disconnected and use a volt/ohm meter to check continuity between the positive and negative wires. you have a direct short from battery positive to ground.
i am 90% correct 60% of the time.

You have a short to ground and basicly overheated the battery and cables because of the massive current flow. You are going to need to find the fault to ground on the pos side and replace any overheated cables.

I have never had anything but problems from ACDelco batteries. Cracking leaking acid all over the car and driveway.
If you have a Sams or costco membership just get battery there. Good prices and good warranty. If not pick one up at your local auto store.

those optima batteries are junk though.. if your rock climbing i can see.. but for normal use they are terrible.. I can almost guarantee that if you leave your lights on and that battery drains down.. you will never get it to charge back up.. also those batteries take a special battery charger.. i run a Interstate battery in all my cars when the factory AC Delco battery goes..
