Oil to use when you don't know what's in the engine previously?

Oil to use when you don't know what's in the engine previously? Looking at buying a 99 firebird ls1 and basically wouldn't want to use synthetic if it's never been used. Is it as bad to use conventional if it's been synthetic all it's life?
