Default Oil to use when you don't know what's in the engine previously?

Looking at buying a 99 firebird ls1 and basically wouldn't want to use synthetic if it's never been used. Is it as bad to use conventional if it's been synthetic all it's life?

It's up to you what to use. Stay away from "cleaning" oils and Mobil oil because it's thin.

My favorite oil is castrol edge 5w30 because it is very viscous and thick even after 5k miles

Seconded. I use Castrol Edge in both my 01 TA and 99 Grand Cherokee. Don't know what the previous owners used but at 120k and 154k miles, respectively, both run very well.
