Default Do looped heater lines lead to overheating?

I have no heat, and the best thing I have read is to loop the lines for the coolant to flow around the thermostat like it would with a heater core. That should work in theory.
However the other night we did a test fire and let the engine run up to temp in the garage. The in car gauge was reading around the 3rd mark with the fans running, but the scanner we had hooked up was reading mid to upper 200's IIRC.
Now the rpm on the scanner is also reading high compared to the gauges, and we know the gauges are accurate on that.
It is also possible that it was just some air pockets making it read false as well.

My question here is, are the looped lines proven to run, and if one parameter on the scanner is off, does it make sense for the others to be as well?
