Default What is this thing on the t-stat?

Just installed a new radiator so I figured I'd replace the t-stat and the radiator cap as well. When I opened the box the t-stat was in I heard a no use when I shook the box. I noticed the t-stat had a metal piece on the top that I'd never seem before. Is this normal or did I get a defected one? Here are the photos

Its normal. I've seen that on every t-stat I've changed. Not sure of the function though.

That little brass thing that jiggles around? Totally normal.

It keeps from getting an air lock in the engine after you replace the thermostat.

It's basically a bleed hole. As you fill the radiator up, the air from inside the block is allowed to escape(forced out) letting coolant in. Back in the day guys would drill a small hole in the thermostat.
