Default No start solenoid not engaging

I put in a new starter and the car fired right up. Now about a week later when I turn the key I can here the starter spinning but not engaging the flywheel. Could my brand new starter already have gone bad? I've only started the car once since putting it in. I check the wires on the back of the starter and they were all tight. What else could be causing this?

it sounds like your solenoid that's on the starter is not connected to the fork that throws the pinion out to engage the flywheel. the solenoid on the starter is an electromagnet plunger and does 2 things at once when it gets power- the plunger moves rearward and when that happens it pulls the fork in the starter nosecone and pushes the pinion out, and when the plunger gets rearward it makes the electrical contact which sends power to the starter motor making it spin. the plunger part that connects to the fork is plastic so i suppose it's possible it's worn or was misassembled and pulled through the fork.

part 55-209 is the fork the solenoid connects to.
