first and foremost, does anyone have a pic of spock doing the shocker?
i would do a simple thermostat change before anything, after 14 years it's not uncommon at all for them to stick open or closed and cause the car to overheat or not heat up.
i disagree on the 99+ temp gauges being inaccurate. they are accurate, just not linear. between ~170° and 230° it does not move much at all about the 210 mark, but once coolant goes over 230° the gauge quickly moves to the right. I've observed it with a scan tool on the obd port reporting real time coolant temp from the pcm.
