Unhappy Trans Am Down and I need a place to start.

Took a cruise in the TA for the first time in a few months. I did the usual checks, oil, air filter, battery. Dead battery was the only issue. Charged it for about 30 minutes and rolled over, brought it up to temperature and left the house.

About 20min into the cruise I noticed a few pinging sounds and couldn't tell anything so I turned around and started back home realizing something didn't sound right. Then it was getting worse and started more repetitive and I could feel the sound in the gas pedal but it was still running fine and I only had about 12miles home. I was limping it as much as possible and didn't use the brake much. Got to the main road to my house and it died at the light. It started back up immediately but would not stay running unless I kept the pedal pressed but now the pinging was more and more frequent so I pulled over and had it towed the rest of the way.

Just curious what to do.

it has had a tune, MS4 Cam, 399 Heads only about 6500 miles ago.

I have a sick feeling that I need to break this sucker open again....

Any help.

Sounds like fuel system problem, blocked fuel filter- rusted fuel lines etc. Pinging because its running lean, rust will block the fuel injector screens.

1.any check engine lights? -if so get the code, I'd think you'd throw a code for bad coil pack, lean misfire etc....if it ran this poorly

2.check the oil for silvery sheen

3.check the antifreeze for oil/water mix

4.pull all the spark plugs-check for wet/soot/oil

5.pop the valve covers --- check for push rod or rocker issue

---I'm going from easiest thing to check to harder and harder....

Good luck
Mike
