Default Burning oil!!!!!!!

hey guys I just changed my oil 2k miles ago and I noticed that it sucked over a quart in oil. I have NEVER had any leaks what so ever, and I really don't drive her all that hard (for the most part). This wouldn't have anything to do with bad piston rings would it? I just hope this isn't really bad on the engine life.

Its more than likely the damn PCV system. It's faulty by design, and allows the engine to suck in oil through the intake manifold from the PCV. If you pull your Throttle body off and look inside your intake manifold, its more than likely covered in oil. I know mine was when I checked it a couple weeks ago.

There are a couple solutions. One is to convert to the LS6 style PCV system - it works for some, but not for others. It will also cost you about $80 and involves pulling off the intake manifold, which isn't exactly fun.

The other solution is to convert the PCV system to a breather style system. This is what I am seriously considering doing. Basically you just re-route the PCV hoses to breather filters instead of having them connect to the TB/intake. It should eliminate the oil consumption, as well as keep the top end of the motor cleaner and make it run better since it won't be burning oil. It's also reccommended that you change out the oil cap for a breather element, for extra ventination. It also won't pass state inspection, but its easy enough to reconnect some hoses and make it look factory

Hope that helps.

Are you sure about that? I thought that LT1 was a stronger motor then LS1 cuz it was iron block. Besides, I heard more oil burn on LS1 then on LT1.

I drive a 2002 T/A, I believe it came with the LS6 intake....bottom line is though, will this hurt the life of the engine?

Looks like you'll have to install a catch can like the rest of us. Mine just started sucking in through the PCV all of a sudden one weekend.

what kind of oil are you running? i'm gonna take a shot in the dark and guess a mobil 1 30W. if you are, i'd recommend a thicker oil, like mobil 1 0W-40 or, my personal favorite, 'made in germany' castrol 0W-30. with the GC (german castrol) 0W-30, your oil consumption problems will lessen, if not completely go away. i'm not burning oil, or at least anymore than any other car would.

Got a 01 vette that loves to suck about a quart of oil down every month or so and it hardly gets driven. My 98z with 110xxx miles doesnt even use oil but im running high milage in there the vette gets the mobil one.

it won't hurt you at all. mobil 1 5W-30 is a very poor choice for the LS1. it's too thin IMO. why does GM recommend it? well, because mobil 1 obviously pays them to advertise it.

i'd go for 'made in germany' castrol syntec 0W-30 from autozone as my first choice. if you don't live near an autozone or cannot find it at an autozone, go mobil 1 0W-40. GC 0W-30 is the better oil, however.

CAFE is the reason for the viscosity.

I'm running the 5W40 M1 now. It has stopped almost all of the consumption. With the 5W30 M1, it'd suck over a quart every 800-1000 miles.

Looks like I have just ran into this problem myself. Odd thing is I have oil pressure but I was bone dry. No leaks anywhere I could find.

I'm not sure how much is left in the pan once it won't read on the dipstick..hopefully it was enough to prevent any major damage. I'd check for shavings and such in the oil though.

well if you want a good deep roar, expect it to be iron block. sound, strength and less worries on overheating. at least LT1's dont need a girdle to stop the block from flexing above 500hp
