Did my ignition Switch or starter go out??
this happend a couple of days ago. i drove my 98' trans am to school in the moring and parked it about noon. it was running fine. came back out about 6 to go out for the night and car won't start. had my friend listen under the hood to see if he could even hear my starter trying to engage but there was absolutly no noise at all under the hood.
I personally think that it is my Ignition switch but people say go ahead and check the starter. but i don't want to take my starter off(cause it's a bitch) if i don't have too.
what do yall think that it is and how much do u think it will be to get fixed??
any input is helpful.

Do you have a flashing security light on the gauge cluster? If so it could very well be the VATS system. Either the chip on your key is not being read by the contacts in the ignition or the key is not working. Try cleaning your key or using a spare key if that is the problem. Search VATS if you find that you have these syptoms. It can be bypassed by wiring in resistors or tuned out. Or you can just get a new ignition key tumbler with new contacts inside.

This is the order I would trouble shoot that problem (as long as the security light is not flashing or ON)
1. Jump the car off, does it start?
2. Check the voltage at the starter with a meter
3. Clean the grounds and then make sure they are tight.
4. Take the two bolts out of the starter and have it tested.

ok so i took the starter off my car and had it tested at auto zone. it failed on all four tests.
so i bought a new starter and it still didn't start and all my connections i doubled checked.
then i had my key checked by the dealership and they said that the chip went bad.
my confusion is how the hell can both of these things go out at the same time
and yes the securtiy light on my gauges is flashing when i have the car just to accessories.
