The most common places are the pressure line from the pump to the steering gear and the pump shaft seal behind the pulley. Its normal to have a film around the steering gear around the boot area and where the steering shaft goes in. If you have drips from the steering gear then that needs attention.

the driver side boot is leaking. i pulled it out and there was a ton of fluid in there. it looks like there should be a seal or some sort of O-RING between the center and a shaft that moves i guess. am i going to have to replace the whole rack and pinion? or do they sale a replacement seal?

I do believe they seal a seal kit but I've never had much success with them. I always do the entire rack.
