Default A little wheel movement when car is in the air.

After trying to narrow a noise in my back rear I lifted up my car and noticed the wheel has a little play to it and and go back and forth maybe 1-2 inches. There should be no movement, right? Wheel bearing?

Are you sure it was really 1-2 inches? If that was the case you would have a serious wobble going down the road. A bit of play in the rear wheels is normal.

Yea, now that I think of it 1-2 inches is a little over exaggerated. I have a noise that I have been concerned about. I was convinced at first it was my differential -- I just had the fluid changed and I wonder if the guy added the additive like I told him.

Anyway, my friend just told me to ask the forum about it since he said straight axle cars shouldn't have any play when moving them in the air. Sorry that I am a little newbish in this area.

When turning left or right or slowing down to a stop I can hear a dull "chattering" sound I guess would describe it. Hard to hear unless youre listening for it.

And I did mean left to right with turning the wheel, not pushing in and out.

Take and put your hands 12 and 6 on the tire and try to move that way and watch you upper and lower ball joints for move ment. You can also take the tire off and grab the wheel studs and try moving up and down If the wheel bearing is shot you'll see alot of sloppy move ment. Also check the tie rod ends for excessive movement.

Thanks, I will try it out when I get off of work. Is it normal for a little movement? If I go back and forth it seems to make a little bit of a "clunk" type of noise.

If your hearing a knocking sound something is going bad. Like keliente said alittle movement is ok but not too much. With the wheel off... if you spin the wheel hub does the bearing catch of feel rough?

I didn't even get to take the wheel off since it was late and got dark real quick. I might have to wait until tomorrow to mess around with it.

I know we arent basing it off much, but since I have to wait, any guesses?

Are you just rotating the wheel in opposite directions and hearing a clunk?
