K&N HP2006 and other long filter users with lowered cars beware, pics inside
Hey All,
I put the long K&N filter on about 6 weeks ago, and Its been great. I was driving today in a parking lot over a TINY bump @ 10mph(see pic), and it must have been the perfect angle/bad luck/dip before and it caught the bottom of the oil filter Luckily I was able to hear the spurting and immediately pull into a parking lot. Would have been so much worse if I was at speed with the music turned up...
It really messed the filter up, I was surprised there was no damage to the pan. I was able to take it off, put a new (temporary) short fram filter on and add 4 quarts. I was surprised that it spat 4 quarts in about 7 seconds out of the holes from the spot welds on the bottom of the filter. Sure made a mess....
Heres my original thread showing how low it hung under the car installed
https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...ic-inside.html
The pics are after I spread dry sweep over the oil (military posts are super stringent about hazmat spills)
Dont mind the 2 holes in the side of the filter, I had to pucture it with a screwdriver to get it off.

Holey shnikeys! Good thing you caught it in time!
Something similar happened when I saw stationed in Ramstein. I was running a small street sweeper that spring a hydraulic oil leak....... Right in the O-Club parking lot,...... And adjacent to CENTCOM and Wing Command.. It wasn't my fault but the shop bosses had my ***.... Oddly enough, I got coined by a Shirt while I was cleaning it up. A trail just like yours, but went almost 360* around the perimeter of the parking lot.

The small gain in using a longer filter is just not worth the risk. Do you realize just about anything hitting that filter at 60 mph is going to puncture it? The standard oil filter flows plenty, i'm just not understanding why people take such a risk? I've seen this type of damage so many times, usually with bad results. At 55 mph if anything punctures the oil filter you only have a few seconds to turn the engine off and save it.

^ Actually, I don't know if it did or not. It was back in 04 or so. It's not like it was my fault, I don't know why the bosses jumped me. A blown line is a blown line and I cleaned it up.

Never buy another oil filter again, just clean it out with some carburetor cleaner.

Plus it'll help cool the oil, a little bit.
I've been running this filter for probably 4-5yrs now.

I'm also running a longer truck filter, a Cummins LF. Never hit anything, even here in NYC with our lousy streets. I have rubbed the deeper Derale cooling pan.
I think the welded nut on the K&N filter is like an extra hand out there trying to grab things. I'll bet if it didn't have it, you wouldn't have hit it.
