Default Volts gauge and mileage not showing and wants to die at idle

Buddy's car volt gauge kept going down so had battery tested it was good pulled alternator had tested it was good this wire that plugs in to the alt was broken so we fixed it put everything back in started right up volts gauge mileage was working put it in gear acted like it wanted to die without gas after we go home after two minute drive the volts gauge won't show anything and mileage is blank

I checked fuses to gauges on side of dash and under hood also switched starter and alternator relay and still same thing
