Default Will I see any gains?

I've got an '02 SS M6 and it's stock except for a lid. I just got rid of the y pipe and catback for 3" pipes coming off the headers going to a 3" dr. gas xpipe being dumped right before the rear axle with no mufflers. Right now I have stock headers (long tubes are coming.) Is this exhaust too free flowing for my car? Is there such a thing is too much free flow on an ls1? Or am I going in the right direction since i'm going to get headers?

Save your money and do your exhaust when you get the LTs.

Top end will increase slightly but your bottom end will suffer. With 3.46 gears you will be a deamon above 110. Too free flowing exhaust in any stock engine with stock valve springs will cause them to float. (there is not enough back pressure to close them completely before another ignition in the cylinder.) Also depending on the headers you may see too much scavenging wich might increase your oil consumption as many people have experienced. It "could" pull the oil right past your valve seals.

Just an observation.

I say go back with a y-pipe.

Y-Pipes have a kind of Venturi Effect going on. The flow from one bank kind of pulls the exhaust out of the other, going into one and the Y creating backpressure.......whereas on an X-Pipe, the same is occuring, but after the X, they split apart again, therefore reducing backpressure tremendously, which is a what creates low end torque. Duals do sound VERY good, but IMO, I would only put them on a track-only car, b/c all they are good for is top end.
