I have always wondered this and now ill ask... when i first installed my headers i ran around for about 15 min with them open and then the car started running like ****... how are you guys with open headers and cutouts running around and still keeping your car running "right?"

I don't think many people run actual open headers, but rather LT headers with extensions and/or bullet mufflers. This is done to protect the O2's from fresh air that can cause misleading measurements for the engine, which would make it run poorly. Often, running "open" headers will require some tuning due to the massive loss of backpressure.

I think 16" - 24" is pretty common, at least from what I have seen. I have dual cutouts so I can run open headers. The extensions off the cutouts are about 18" away from the O2 sensors which provides enough piping to protect the O2's.

oooo..... so as long as you have enough space between the O2's and the fresh air your fine...k... you or any one have a pic of the dual cutouts?

open headers cause a rich condition due to the o2's reading ambient air temp. that fouls out the plugs. It has nothing to do with backpressure.

Cut outs at the end of each header ( no cats), the car is tuned to run that way, I dont know what effects it has when the cut outs are closed (going through stock exhaust), but you can definatly tell a performance lose.

Everytime I see that set up it is like a work of art
Have you got to see the difference in HP/Tq on a dyno or at the track?
