I thought the MACs sounded a bit raspier in the 2000 - 2400 rpm range when I had them

Yep, mids hit that "raspy" spot in the rpm range

My macs/ory sound like firecrackers in a coffee can at 2.5k . Pop open the cutout and all is well.

Sure Mac's without cats sound very raspy in the mid rpm range, but so do all of the longtube set-ups to me too...I've heard some incredibly raspy cars running LT's/no cats out there... Put cats in, and bam, NO rasp. It also depends upon what cat-back you run...Loudmouth, Borla, Flowmaster, Corsa, etc. will all sound very raspy without the cats while the Hooker, 2OTL, & Dual/Dual won't be nearly as bad...

I personally think that the long tube has a much better sound when running a cut out. but like your post asked... with the cats in place there won't be much of a difference. Ihave heard them back to back in my driveway when comparing my car to a friends. We both agreed.

i couldnt even hear my car when it was parked next to WOT. we both have the cutout on the i-pipe. our cams arent much different. he has a 231/237 and i have a 232/236. he has a shitload more power than me though!

of all the cars i have heard in person, i definitely liked the sound of lt's better than my mids. jmo

I had Mac mids first, and yes they have a rasp to them. I thought all headers would sound like that, but when I put a pair of Pacesetter LTs ceramic coated, I don't hear any rasp like the Macs had.
