Exactly right. The words "best" and "under $500" do not apply for the LS1 platform. Paying that price for a brand new set of LT's is always a compromise.
If you want LT's for under $500, you will get will what you pay for. To me the MAC's are a good header and Y pipe for that price range.
Even though they seem to be looked on here with disdain, the quality is good, power is good, fitment is great with excellent ground clearance for a lowered car.

Pacesetters if you have to have new headers, or find some used Kooks/QTP(better option). SS may look somewhat dirty when they "color" but their performance and durability can't be beat.

Pacesetters.
I got my Jet-Hot LT's for $515 shipped two years ago on a group purchase. You might be able to get hooker/jet-hots or similer on sale.

True duals won't fit especially well with a 1.5" drop. Have to get htem tucked up really high....at any rate you won't have very good clearance. I have jet-hots to speed inc true duals on a stock ride height car and only get ~4" of ground clearance.

Hookers are great headers, but like i said, pacesetters welds look good. Just dont go with flowtechs. For true duals on a lowered car, would will have to go with 2.5 pipe or some good custom work for 3 inch.
