160 Stat Question

Default 160 Stat Question

When I install the 160 stat, and catch all the antifreeze that runs out, can I just pour it back into the radiator? The OEM coolant is supposed to be good for like 100K miles. Do I have to pour new coolant back in? Thanks.

Don't waste your time on a 160 T-Stat.

Yeah, you can pour it back in as long as it still looks good.

Heck just put new dexecool in there and call it a day... easier than doing a coolant flush later on...

Waste your time? It takes 10 minutes to install a 160* thermostat. It's a cheap mod, and worth the effort. Get a SLP fan switch too.

Fan switch is awesome, I really recommend buying one. The T stat is good as well...but I went with the fan switch over the T stat in the end.

Or get it programmed with HPTuners etc, for the fans to come on sooner.

from my recent experiances I would recommend a 180-185* thermostate and get your fans programed to turn on at th right temp. First off my car produced 7hp more on the dyno when I let it get up to 185 degree's when compared to the first dyno run and the engine was only at 161 degrees(via a scanner). Nothing changed but engine temp. Also I went 2 weeks without my fans being programed and just using my manual fan switch after I put in the thermostat. The car would run fine with the fans on high and after about 15-20 min of driving around the car would slowly start to overheat(I could only tell when looking at the scanner hooked up to the computer, Mac Scan tool). After taking my car in to get the fans re-set to the correct temperature the car runs perfect without overheating at all, even in traffic. If you get the fan switch make it a track only deal and get your fans reprogrammed the correct way.

My stock thermostat was marked as 86C, which is 187F. So, don't go out and buy a 180 to 185, just leave the stocker. However, I went with the 160, partially because I live in Arizona where it's really hot, but mainly because your engine will run above the thermostat setting. My car runs around 185 with the 160 stat and reprogrammed fans.

It's a proven fact that your engine will make more power and burn cleaner when its hotter...cooling it down with a 160 T-Stat won't do anything for you...timing your fans right is all you need.

I have a 160 t stat that i am going to put on and from what i understand it alows you to incease timming a little buy lowering engine temp and raising cylinder pressure that is what i under stand to be true maby im wrong though.

If you are spending the money on the mod, then I would recommend new coolant...it's a small expense in the big picture. If you do decide on reusing the coolant, you could pour it through a coffee filter first to remove the larger dirt/contaminants...

The stock t-stat on LS1's are 195*. Maybe someone changed yours at some point. The car will burn cleaner and make more power running a little hotter. I just didn't like my motor running at close to 210* witht he stock t-stat.

My OEM tstat was marked 86C also, and owners manual says it's supposed to be a 180F.

Well, i did it and thought i would catch it all when it came out...nope, it goes everywhere when it drips all over the pullys and swaybar. Lost about half a gallon that didnt make it in the bucket. Got some Dexcool though and filled it up. My coolant looked brand new though! I expected it to look really burnt or something.

Accoring to my owners manual, stock LS1 t-stats begin to open between 177-184. As other's have stated, all the stock LS1 stats I've seen are makred "86" on the stat, which would in fact be 186.8*F. Either way, it should be FULLY open by 195*.

I am using the stock stat on my '98. Via my scanner, I have seen temps as low as 190 while cruising at steady speed in cool weather. With fan programming, the temps usually stay in the 192-202 range while cruising in stop and go traffic in warm weather.

The reason these cars run in the 210-230 range in traffic stock is not the t-stat, it's the fan settings.
