Some f-cars may have an ls6 block
I just got my GMHTP mag in and there's an article on page 11 that says some of the camaro and firebird/transam guys may be running around with an ls6 block.
In 98 GM used two providers for the ls1 block. Montupet in Canada and Nemak in Mexico. Montupet uses gravity-feed process and uses a combo of metallic dies and sand cores. Nemak uses low-pressure fan process, which is more of a hi performance process.
Then in 01 GM needed to redesign the ls1 to be a stronger ls6. Since Nemak's materials are stronger they went with them.
But still had Montupet provide ls1 blocks.
During the redesign so many were made that GM allowed some blocks to spill over into f-bodies. It is said that 10-15 percent of all 2001 f-cars and around 25percent of 02 f-cars are running around with ls6 blocks.
To confirm: look behind the drivers-side and see if you can see the back of the left-hand deck, above the transmission flange.
A cast-in 12561168 denotes the LS6 block.
A harder way to tell is, the Montuupet plant cast is shinier, the Nemak plant made duller, stronger block castings. I know that's hard to tell, but it's what the magazine says.
Starting in 03 all ls1/ls6 blocks will be of this newer Nemak configuration.
BTW, the ls6 block ventilates 87% more than the ls1, which is less pumping loss at high rpm. No official hp claims have been made, but it does increase hp.
later,

I think <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> 2001+ have the LS6 cam and intake or a version of the LS6 cam anyway.

No, the only thing the '01-'02 LS1 fbodys have is the LS6 intake. I have heard this rumor about some getting an LS6 block, but nothing more.

The 2001 and 2002 Fbodys also have the same cam as the 2001-2003 vettes. Not Z06s though.
Cam specs
2001-2002 Fbody
.479/.467- valve lift
207/196- duration
116 LSA
117/115- timing
The LS6 car has
2001- .525/.525- lift
211/204- duration
116 LSA
114/118- timing
2002-2003 LS6
.551/.555- lift
218/204- duration
117.5 LSA
115/120- timing
Hope this helps.

Re: Some f-cars may have an ls6 block
We knew some 2001 had the LS6 block, but didn't know how to find out what we had. After we read the artical today we tried to find those numbers. We went out armed with a flashlight and a mirrow but no use, we couldn't find it. Does anyone know an easier way to do this? Directions with pictures might be helpful. lol

Yea, and I think High Performance Pontiac had it in print about two months ago. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

I read that article as well, I'm going to take a look at the # as soon as my motor comes out...
I'm too lazy to stick a mirror in the back w/a flashlight....

This was posted and gone into in great detail 4-5 months ago here is a link to a thread showing how to tell without pulling your engine or using a mirror. I have the ls6 in my 2002 <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

Actually 10-15% of all 2001 f bodys have the LS6 block. And 25% of all the 2002 F cars have the LS6 block. To check to see if yours is an LS6, look for casting number 12561168 on the left hand deck above the transmission flange. You can also tell by the block's luster. The LS1 has a shinier block, while the Nemak block is duller

That's nice <img border="0" alt="[punch]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_punch.gif" /> , I have a subscription to both magazines and was trying to help with the confusion. Shut your mouth, I don't give a damn about your attitude or what you have to say. <img src="http://www.fuelslut.com/forum/images/smiles/finger.gif" alt=" - " />

Well, if you'd have READ the thread before just posting, you'd have seen the info posted several times.
Or did they not teach you "Reading 101" at your local community college?
So <img src="http://www.fuelslut.com/forum/images/smiles/finger.gif" alt=" - " /> right back at you!
