This is the tool that slides in the front of the block that hold the lifters up. I have heard of a few guys on here using wood dowel pins as well as 516 stock I was just wondering what i have to do to make it work and how long they how to B?

I was thinking about getting these...better than spending the $80 for the version on Thunder Racing.

5/16" wooden dowels from home depot.....less than $2, works just fine. This should probably be in the internal engine section btw.

I used quarter inch wooden dowel rods, 5/16 was too big for me. You can get a 48 inch piece, I think, for 50cent, then cut it in half.

I used 2 5/16" steel rods. One side went in fine, other side needed a VERY slight flat area grinded into it. Took about 10 seconds with a die-grinder.

I understand the function of the dowel rods and magnets to hold up the lifters, but where would you put the dowels? i haven't done a cam swap and was wondering...

The two holes just above and to the left/right of the cam. They look to be about 5/8", but you need 5/16th or 1/4" rods.

Ok maybe Im missing something here but why even bother putting dowels in when the lifters will lock themselves in place with a couple turns of the cam? I can see doing all this for insurance reasons if the cam will be out for awhile but otherwise I dont see a need for specials tools.

Or 5/16's brake line will do the trick as well....

You must not have dont many cam swaps them. Ive done over 100 now and had a few that the lifters wouldnt stay. Pen magnets work great and all but can be a bitch to get unstuck from the lifters at times. I use the rods every time and have yet to have a lifter fall in any install.

Nope sure havent on LS1s. I have done one and I am getting ready to stick a cam in my car when I get home from Iraq. This is just the first time that I have read that its common for the lifters to drop. Good info though.....I will definitly be using this trick when I do it.
