These Huge Cams..... Why do I feel small now?

These Huge Cams..... Why do I feel small now?
I remember when everyone was saying how a MMS229 cam was too much for a NA 346ci.. Actually, I remember when some were complaining about the idle of the T1.. Now we have cams averaging 232 plus.. My #'s are great in my opinion for what I have, but recently I wonder what higher compression or a bigger cam or both would do for me.. We have come a long way in just a few short years.. I fear if I upgraded now there will be 500rwhp 346ci Hyd cammed cars in a year or so.. What do you guys think? My cam is a 232/236. It use to be huge until recently..

well vince something is wrong when you feel small... but saying that, no way in HELL do i think your cam is small! that is a big cam. many people still ask me how my 230/230 cam idles in my A4 tranny. also remember how many people on this site have a head and cam car and how many out of these have big big cams? not really that many. it is just the huge cam guys are posting and replying a LOT. imagine that, guys with big cams are attention ****** unless you are going for that every little bit, why change your big cam for a what effectually becomes a solid roller, just with hydra-lifters? i am sure you motor on the crack is plenty

I got the mms229 cam, other than the lope it drives like stock. The 114 lsa really tames the cam.
Id like to see someone try a 240/240 106 cam. Im curious if it would make a lot of torque.

Well, sooner or later we will reach the limit of cam size for a stock displacement read> [Daily Driver].
Just my opinion, but these cams in the 230+ duration can't be much fun in heavy traffic on a daily basis.
****, I needed PCM work done to keep my TR220 from stalling at idle in my A4. I did not want to open the hole much in the throttle plate. I think PCM programming is the best fix for that.

Well my cam was huge back in the day but now it is almost considered the norm. 234/244 112lsa.
Drives fine in traffic. Ask my wife, she drives it.

Ron dont knock it till you try it. My XER 230/230 112LSA is perfect in stop and go traffic. With good tuning it is very drivable. I could go a LOT bigger and still drive no problem on the street

All you guys with these huge cams, are you really making alot more power than the smaller cam setups (224 range cams)? I've seen small cam setups make damn good power too.
Just think, if that LSX intake works out, all of you will have to do a cam swap one more time to take advantage of it. Might want to wait for now

Re: These Huge Cams..... Why do I feel small now?
My lsa is 114. I have no issues in traffic.. I have 5.7L heads.. They are already milled .040 from what I was told. With my 2cc valve reliefs in my flat top JE Pistons that should equate to 10.7:1 or 10.75:1.. We did a P/V clearance on the cam using the put the hanger in the spark plug tech and did not even touch the hanger wire turning the motor completely over.. I like my cam. If I mill my heads another .020 that would probably max out the milling and I do not think that would bring my compression up that much more. I could just go with a thinner head gasket or do both to get the compression up, but once again. All this for maybe 10rwhp more?

well true, it's not gonna be practical with those heads, or to go to some 5.3's but you're loosing alot of cyllinder pressure w/ the 114. but hey, thats what the spray is for right sounds like a stout enough combo though. and you wont pick up that much more with a "bigger" cam either.

*shrug*...
I guess Im with Nineball and the Col.
For a 387, my X1 on a 114 is small and drivable.
First off... Peak HP #s dont mean crap to me. Sure, they are fun to talk about and it really fun to say your car puts 500hp to the wheels or whatever. But when the car is a street car, how much time is spent full throttle 6000+ rpm (where these hp #s are)? I spend FAR more time 3000-6000. Thats where I get my giggles. And I dont take the car to the drag strip. So In theory, I want the cam that provides the most power from idle-redline. And for now, I think my X1 does that fine.
Part of choosing the cam is the APPLICATION. If we all had the same application, then we should all have the exact same engine, soup to nuts. But thats not the case, so maybe the smaller cam is the right one for the job. Whatever cam gets the car out of the garage and the smiles on your face is the right one.

We should all start talking about torque at 3000 rpm and see where these big cams line up
