Default Oil plug?

Is the block plug I have circled here an oil plug (it's right above where the oil filter is)? Has anyone ever had one leak? I've been chasing a BAD oil leak for a while now, and I think it might be coming from here. I've changed rear covers/gaskets, rear main seals, and oil pans/gaskets and it still leaks in the same spots. It's hard to tell exactly where. It only leaks when it runs. And it drips down. Drips off rear most driver side oil pan bolt and in between bellhousing and block.

thats a block drain for coolant.
as for the oil leak have you checked the oil sending unit?
it sounds likely as you have elimanated alot.
uv dye in the oil and a black light can help a lot on pita leaks

Check your rear oil galley plug, right behind the pilot bearing. It looks like a bottle cap/freeze plug. It seals the crank from any oil coming out.

I just bumped the thread.

That's the clean side of the main oil galley. If you were plumbing an Accusump, this is where you would plumb the feed line into the block.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have checked all of the before mentioned symptoms. I have cleaned everything off with brake cleaner and searched and hunted. With the tranny out. If it was possible (hell, it might be), I would say that it is leaking out of the driver side rear corner bolt of the oil pan. Then running along the rear of the oil pan and dripping down in between the bellhousing and block.

The reason I "thought" it might be that plug, is because I simulated that plug leaking, and oil dripped almost the exact same way the leak does. But I've been under the car with it running, and I couldn't see any oil coming from that plug.

I'm lost guys. When I say it's a bad leak, I mean after 10 minutes I had a 12" diameter puddle under the car. So needless to say, I want this fixed.

Hey guys, is that oil galley plug, or whatever it is that circled in the first post of this thread......near the front-right-bottom of the block near the A/C compressor?

No, on the other side of the block.

Have you put a little bit of RTV in the gap between the gap of the rear cover and the block, where these 2 meet the oil pan mating surface area. And it doesnt hurt to put some in the front near the front cover as well.

Tried that too...still leaks. Very frustrating.

What about the oil cooler bypass gasket on the side of the oil pan above the oil filter... It is a very common problem and GM has actually changed the gasket from an o-ring style to a steel shim.

^^I was thinking that too, but the way he describes it, it sounds like it's something closer to the center of the Engine.

You didn't tighten the horizontal bolts in the back before you tightened all the vertical oil pan bolts did you? I've seen this happen before and the oil pan doesn't seal up correctly.

I suppose this is possible...but I did remove it and it showed no signs of leaking.

Oh, and the leak is definately NOT from the center. Its toward the corner.

What do you mean horizontal/vertical? If you mean did I tighten all the oil pan to block bolts before I tightened the rear cover to oil pan bolts, then yes I did. That way I know the oil pan is straight.

Thanks again guys...keep the ideas coming!

Does anyone know if the rear corner oil pan bolt goes through an oil passage?

I've been chasing an oil leak for the last year. Changed rear main seals, rear cover, and oil pan gasket twice. No luck. Saw your post, did the flourescant die and black light trick, low and behold it was this plug. Oil ran down the pan rail to the rear cover where the flywheel caught it and slung it around everywhere. Could not actually see the oil leaking from the plug with the naked eye (long tubes in the way).

Took the plug out, cleaned her up, put some fresh dope on the threads....NO LEAK!!

(edit) Just realized the date, sorry 'bout resurrecting old thread....

That's an oil gallery plug buddy. Not a coolant plug. Common leaking place. Use high temp sealant and torque to 44ft lbs.
