Default Crank Bolt Threads

I am worried that I might have damaged the threads in the crank snout when I had the crank bolt back in to remove the damper. I think the force on the bolt pushed the threads closer together or something, the bolt doesn't thread back in easily. Can I run a tap or something through the threads a few times to restore the original condition? What size are would I need?

The size is M16 X 2mm. I would get a thread chaser, not a tap. A tap will remove material and possibly damage the threads even more.

Did you follow LS1howto.com? My guess is yes as the methods used on that site result in a lot of damaged crankshaft threads.

No I followed what people on here said, but I think I didn't put the bolt in far enough, to get good purchase. Thanks, I'll find a thread chaser

Worst case senario; You cant fix it, ive been there. You can always drill and tap your crank snout for the next larger size bolt. I did that and bought some all thread to make a stud for holding the dampner on the crank.

Check ARP for a part number. I ordered the ones I use for head swaps from SDPC.

The hardware store should have one in the proper size... M16 x 2.0 I also have tapped new threads into the end of my crank and it worked well.
