Tsp 220 or 224r with stock converter?

Tsp 220 or 224r with stock converter?
Well guys i want to get yall's opinions what cam should i get on a stock converter also what lsa will be safer? The tsp 220 or can i make it by with a
224r or will it push through the brakes to bad? Its a daily driver mostly highway she's got some mileage on her so i want the cam small regardless, stock heads lt's, lid ,ory,hooker catback, what power should i make with either cam? Thanks

Two things of concern with aftermarket cams and stock converters:
1) Idle speeds - aftermarket cams generally require higher idle speeds. With a stock converter, you most likely will get a harsh engagement when you go from park/neutral to in gear. I've been in a car when this happened and it didn't sound too hot.
2) Lock-up - this is more with all torque converters in general. The lockup needs to be adjusted and/or cam manners need to be adjusted to avoid low RPM surging when the torque converter clutch is engaged. That is of course unless you like head banging...

I know you're looking to do the cam change but...
I was in that cam vs. converter delima recently too. My car is bolt on basics and I wanted more so I was thinking cam. After some research I ended up doing the converter at this time instead. I figured that I did not want to fight a lopey cam on the stock converter plus I found several post that said the converter was the best mod they've done so far.
I ended up installing a Yank SS3600. I can say that I am one happy MF'er. The cam will come soon but the converter has made a world of difference, I love it. And, when I do the cam I don't have to worry about finding one that will work with a stock 'verter.

ya i understand the whole small cam vs converter but i want a small cam regardless, had one in my lt1 and was happy, i dont want my car to be a dyno queen i just want a little xtra power, in other words i know what i want in a cam and what to expect from a small one as for the converter i am planning a 3k or a 3200 but only after i get a rebuild so for now is there anybody else that has ran these or similar cams with a stock conveter i want opinions from experience. Thanks again guys!

Both the 220 & 224R camshafts have been run with stock verters before. I personally like the 224R+4 or the newer TSP 225/225 camshaft with +4 advance. Both camshafts make great down low power for stock verters.

i know this is digging but might as well keep a good thread goign if it helps people. im in the process of thinking of a cam too between these two cams exactly. either the 220R or the 224R. mostly due to turbo purposes, but wanting good N/A street manners when im putting along. of alot of cams ive been looking around at for off the shelf, these specs keep coming up frequently and have me pretty interested in a cam now. especially since i dotn need a huge cam to go turbo since our stock cams do a pretty good job at in mild form.
which would you recommend? im already looking through the website as im typing this lol looking at the cam/spring/pushrods sale you got there.... very tempting lol

Glad to see your browsing the website. I would recommend looking at the 224R on a 114LSA. This would no doubt retain the street manners your looking for but work well for you with a boosted setup. It will provide a nice mild idle, and good bump in power.

yeah, thats what im starting to really lean towards. i think i will go with the 224r cam. im still wondering about the LSA a bit like a 116 instead of 114. does it make that big of difference when turboed? i know the LSA contributes to the "loppyness" and idle a bit.

oh, and to the OP, im sure alot has changed since 2009 lol, but i woudl hope you have a converter in your car by now. i went the stall first route. glad i did. now i have the option of getting a bigger mild type cam withour worrying too much about my car pushing through.
i did a 3200 stall and my car felt so much more alive and shifting was so much better. i couldnt image what my car would feel like with a 220 or 224 cam but im sure it would be GOOD

well, i think i had my mind made for me. a 224 cam is gonna be in my future here. now if only my car was not in the middle of the ocean i could get it on it sooner lol but ill have it back in oct and will be playing in texas soon enough!! cant wait to start. thanks!!

I just got my 224r on a couple days ago. Everything was going smooth until I was tightening down the damn underdrive pulley. It was way to hard to get on the whole way and I think I put some stress on the crank threads pulling it on. Also while pulling it on my screwdriver locked in the flywheel snapped in half from putting so much pressure on it and got lodged in the transmission. Luckly I was able to spin it all the way around and pull the other half out. Now I'm trying to figure out if I pulled the damn pulley on far enuf or not.....

Just sucks everything was going so good and it turned into a train wreck lol. I just hope my crank threads are all good. I stripped one of the thread on the long crank bolt putting it in, but than the stock crank bolt threaded in fine and pulled it on so idk. Now my problem is it doesn't seem like it wants to go all the way on
