Default Question About Cam Lift

Does lift have any effect on the power output or driving characterics of a given cam? I'm looking at a 229/234 .605/.595 112 cam, but just wondering if cars even benefit from lift of .581 or higher on stock heads. Does lift affect gas mileage?

Thanks

From what I have read and seen, a stock headed ar does NOT benefit from a lift over .585 ish.

For example-
My old cam, Red Devil's, and a friends RPM 3 followed the same hp/tq curves on the dyno. They were all within 3 hp of each other.

All cars are M6.

RPM1- 232/236 54X/54X 112
RPM2- 232/236 571/577 112
RPM3- 232/236 604/608 112

Now on a "stage 2" head, most people believe that they flow the best at a smidge over .600.

Just my .02

It seems to be that gains above .560 are minimal. Now...more duration will do wonders! You're better off keeping middle of the road lift with more duration than kicking them valves skyhigh. An XE-R cam should have a "smoother" idle quality because the valves open and close more rapidly. An XE grind is good...but if you want smooth, look at an XE-R with average duration. It should idle well. There are more variables to look at when it comes to cam idle (LSA, overlap, etc.) but I'm trying to address your topic.

Whoa, that's a big cam if you're using it for street use! I'm not sure but is that a solid lifter cam? I would bet you have to cut your pistons if they're stock, if not it would probably be CLOSE!

So basically all of these big cams from companies that put out crazy numbers with stock heads are more so meant for stage 2 type headed cars, which is why the lift is so high?
