Default thinking about a cam

I was thinking about purchasing a mild cam... There's a 220/220 114 for sale for $150.00. That seems pretty fair. what do ya'll think?

Cams go up for sale all the time. That one is pretty cheap though. What brand is it? Is it the MTI Stealth? Since you are in California, that would be a good cam for you. But you can go up to 224/224 114 which is what I'm doing. I will still be able to pass emmisions, but just barely.

A 220/220 114 will pass emissions without a tune, the 224/224 114 will pass emissions WITH a tune. The 224 will sound cool; the 220 will sound almost stock. I say wait for a deal on a 224 then get a tune. Otherwise, you may end up buying two cams instead of one, which is more expensive in the long run.

thanks ... i'll keep my eyes peeled for that 224. 224 114...

Another ?. Will i need need springs and rockers for that 220 220- 114 cam? I currently have a 98' camaro. But here's the deal. I spun a bearing. Baught a used Late 2001 LS1 LONG block with the LS6 block and bottom end from Gene's Kar shop... Can I use those springs and valves?

Not sure on who made the cam. I was guessing Thunder?

the car is going to be an Auto-X car.. not so much Drag...

Thanks Joel

For either the TR220 or TR224 Thunder recomends Comp 918 springs. The stock springs even from a late 2001 aren't good for anything other than the stock cam.

Even for AutoX I'd still go with the 224 cam over the 220, in fact if you were not in California I would recomend a 230 cam.

whats the lift of the cam, if its a thunder then i believe its .553. if the springs you have (which i doubt unless you have ls6 heads) are ls6 springs you can use those, there good for .560 lift i believe. i'd get some new ones though, the manley kit is nice 178 from SDPC and comes with tit. retainers. your stock rockers are fine.

Damn i wish I could find the card. The two things I remember were the LSA, which was 113.5 and the lift, which I thought was 558. After looking at TR's web site, the 220 is less than that. But I do recall thinkning that the lift was not what was advertised and that it was lower than what was advertised. I wish I could find the card

If I was you I would go with a nice 232 cam I put in the 224/224 cam and it feels good, but It feels weak. the jerkiness isn't there but the sink in the seat after 3500 rpms is there thats for sure Hell I ran a 13.1 with a 2.1 60ft (first time to track) I bogged big time and a formula got the jump on me. He ran a 12.5 and I know if I would of launced my car right I would ran that or if not a tad lower. I had to play the catch up game and reel him in

232 is waaayy to big for California. 224 or even 220 is just fine.

ahhhhh didn't realize it was california . Time to start lookin for some good friends out there in that sate that run the emissions testing.

Well time to go with the 224/224 might wanna go with the 114 cuz your powerband will be more spread out instead of a high peak like the 112

It's pretty difficult now with the NEW SMOG machines. They hook the smog machine to your car's computer, then run the test. The computer instantly send's your VIN number to DMV along with the test readings. And it doesn't matter if you know a friend and just want to test it, the NEW computers send the "test" reading anyhow and let's DMV know that you have a poluting Car!

SO you got to get it legit on the first try. IF anyone here in California knows something else, then my ears are open. Mybe my boy BUBB RUBB knows somone in OAKLAND... WOOT WOOOT?
