Default What's the most power anybody's made with 220/220 and 224/224 (or similar) cams?

Trying to get a feel for what the ceiling is going to be on a 346 with a 220/220 cam, or a 224/224 cam. Any other mods are open season - including (preferably!) heads. I'm curious to know that even with a set of *really* good heads, about what the hp limits would be with these respective durations (XE-R's, TR cams, MTI cams, whatever)

Basically, I'm trying to figure out if it's even worthwhile to do cams these size on a 346, but I'm not willing to go any bigger for idle/smoothness considerations. If not, I guess it will be time to look further into 383's or TT options.

highest i've seen for a T1/C1 with heads is about 420rwhp at tr224 should be a tad higher. i think the 220-224 duration cams are best for daily/strip use. full bolt on cam only with tune your looking at close to 400rwhp which aint bad at all and do not have to be spun to 6600+ . im more an avid fan of low end and mid range power then all out peak power.

The most I've personally seen with a 221/221 sized cam was around 434 rwhp. With a 224/224 cam, about 440 rwhp.

I made 416rwhp 392rwtq with patriot 5.3 stage II heads, TR220 cam and all bolt ons. That was on the stock tune also, I feel like I could have gained a little more with LS1edit tuning for the added timing. That was a really fun combo to drive and it idled damn near stock. A lot of people overlook the "little" cams, but you can make good power with them.

Don't forget the Cartek guys. Their 2x cam is supposedly 224/228 at 113 LSA - same overlap as a 224/224 at 112. And they've made 460+ RWHP?? How do they do it ...

Any shake at idle with the TR220? To get an idea of what I'm looking for, I'd like a cam to pass the "significant other test" - i.e. the woman would never know it was in the car. (99% stock but with more hp...) The MTI stealth seems like it might do the trick. I'm getting a chance to ride/sit/feel a XE-R 220 car this weekend, that should tell me a lot about how close to my goal I'm getting.

Thanks gomer.

I had a tr220 on a 112lsa and the idle was "slightly" rough, but not a "lope" by any means. I have driven a car with a TR220 on a 114lsa and it seemed almost as smooth as stock. I'm sure with LS1edit tuning the idle on my car could have been smoothed out even more.

Btw.. my wife drives my car now with the big ol' TSP231/237 cam in it... she said she likes the way it feels when the seat shakes

I've seen 435rwhp/410rwtq through our Stage 2 heads on a 221/221 B1 cam.

With the Comp 224/.581 cam in M6 cars, we typically see 370-390 RWHP (with bolt-ons) and with typical stage 2 heads 415-440. It is a great "dual purpose" cam in my opinion, bigger cams can make more power, but with more lope and a rougher idle. It depends on what you are looking for.

My 69 LS1/T56 Camaro has this cam on a 114, with older GTP stage 2 heads. It made 415RWHP with 28" slicks on the dyno, and went 120+ trap speeds with a very good idle and drivability.

I have the 218/222 .562 113 LSA Cartek cam. It makes great power and it's not peaky at all. It's got a nice lope to it too. Who says u can't make good power with a small cam. I'm getting my car back tomorrow with 5.3 Patriot stage 2 heads installed. I'll update my dyno #'s soon.
