Need Cam for LS1 Miata (Help!)
Hey guys,
I have an LS1 going in my 01' Miata.
I am going to put a cam in it while the motor is out of the car...
Long story short I called LG Motorsports and they recommended the G5X3 cam...
I looked up the spec's but it shows crazy Lift (.600+) for both intake and exhaust... That coupled with the valve springs they recommended and I was looking at $1600+!!
WAY out of my price range.
People at work (3 friends have LS1 Camaros) are telling me to get the GM Factory Performance Hot cam Kit, which includes the valve springs and the camshaft package. I don't think I will be happy with that combo, though it works.
The next step down on the LG Motorsports cam is the G5X2 cam, which is:
Intake Duration: 232
Exhaust Duration: 240
Intake lift: .595
Exhaust lift: 608
Lobe seperation: 112
Found here:
http://www.lgmotorsports.com/catalog...oducts_id=1509
Now I have a 99 Z28 LS1 with an LS6 Intake going in the car, and shorty headers with a custom intake (Cant use long tubes, no room...)
Anyone have any idea if this cam will bring me to the 400+ Whp mark I am looking for after tuning?
Also, do I have to upgrade pushrods and the timing chain for this cam?
What kind of valve springs are required for this cam? (Cheap but effective... Comp 921's are $700+)
I have a $800.00 out the door limit on this whole cam package.
The car will be a STREET car with AC and PS, will be doing many highway pulls and some Auto-X events, but I don't want this cam to be un-driveable.
I can stand some jerkiness no problem though... so no big deal on that.
Thanks!
<---- LS1 n00b!!!!
Also, I know Cam threads are ALL OVER THE PLACE, but not many have anything to do with LS1 miatas, where I would like to my powerband in the mid-upper rpms as I don't have much room for a fat tire out back.

You might want to call texas speed and see what they have available. Im sure either the ms3,ms4 or Tsunami will do the trick and their cam packages for those cams are under 800$ shipped with everything needed but the tune.

For the money, the hot cam package can make good usable power and retain excellent street manners. Another of my favorite cams for street manners is the torquer 2, you might want 918 springs though. What gears are you going with in the rear end?

I will be using either 3.55's or 3.73's in the back.
T56 obviously...
I would think the GM Hot-Cam would have very good driveability because it is of course a factory "upgraded" camshaft, that probably has a ton of R.D. if I could guess... either that or I dont know what I'm talking about

Vengance Racing has a Cam kit for sale for 650$
https://www.vengeancerd.com/ecart/pr...-camshaft-KITS
Texas Speed's kit is 790 at the moment.
IMO, most of the VRX cams make more average power, and the TSP cams have higher peaks.

Yeah, LG stuff is expensive & more for deep pockets. I have had a ground up built LSX Miata for 7+ years. Go into the "for sale" section & find a used 224/224, .563/.563, 112 LSA. Then find some used 918 springs or better, for the heads. You'll need a pushrod length checker in order to figure the pr length correctly, then buy some Trick-Flow 5/16" pushrods from a sponor (least expensive quality push rods). Go with 3.73's in the rear end or even 3.90's if you're gonna mod the fenders to use wider tires. A tune is a must after the cam install & make sure to degree the cam when installed. Don't get hung up on making a "peak power" number. Under the curve is where it is, in a Miata. You're gonna need an LS6 intake w/ a ported & polished TB, as well.
IMO, heads first & cam second would be better, but, there are plenty of cam only cars making good power.

Thanks for the replies guys!
Will this cam work well?
VRX4 cam
228/230 .588/.592 112LSA
Vengeance Racing Camshaft Kits
Found Here: https://www.vengeancerd.com/ecart/pr...-camshaft-KITS
They give me options of 2 Valve springs:
Comp 918's
TEA Dual Golds
And 3 options for Push-Rod Length:
7.400
7.350
7.425
Will this combo work well? If so, what valve springs and push-rod length should I get?
Thanks!

^^^
We can't tell you the pushrod length. The length has to be measured w/ an adjustable pushrod & a fixed (solid core, no spring) roller rocker. TEA Dual Golds. Yes, the cam will work well. Just make sure that your wheel alignment is correct in the Miata & suspension for that matter. The short wheel base 89" & designed in understeer makes steering @ high speed touchy if not set up correctly.
EDIT:
Posted simultaneously w/Predator. So, ignore any redundance.

Thanks again guys.
I will make my decision later today.
Last question, what do you guys think about the GM performance Hotcam kit for the LS1?
A few friends at work at telling me to get the hot cam because any bigger and I wouldn't really benefit as the stock LS1 heads flow so much.
With an LS6 Intake and the GM Hot cam, and of course a good tune, Sanderson shorty headers, will I break the 400rwhp mark?

Not Worth Installing!!! You won't hit the 400RWHP mark with that cam, especially with stock heads. I knew one person that had the Hot Cam in a M6 and was not that impressed. The thing sounds nice but under performed big time.

If you look at the apples to apples here, that kit for $650 includes the 918 valve springs...we have the same package with any cam, beehives (Comp or PAC), and pushrods for $589.99. Just FYI
