Default Dumb question......but what are these?

Sorry for my stupid questions, but I just got into the LS club last week when I bought this 2001 A4 pullout.

I have no idea what to search for on this because I don't even know what these plugs are called. They are underneath the intake, and hold back the "pan" from coming off.

So I have three questions...

1. What the heck are these plugs?

2. What is the "pan" called?

3. How do you get the clips off of the plugs so I can remove them and get the "pan" (or whatever its called) off?

I've stripped the wiring harness off the engine/trans with no problems, but I cannot figure out how these clips are snapped on to the plugs. I don't want to break anything!!

Like I said, sorry I sound so stupid. But I'm coming from a background of SBC stuff and all of this electrical stuff is way too new to me!! LOL

Thanks!!!

They are the knock sensors. I usually squeeze the wide ends with a pair of pliars to remove them. The "pan" is the valley cover.

Those are knock sensors, to monitor knock.

The cover is called the valley pan cover.

The knock sensors unplug like other weatherpack connectors.

EDIT: Tree'd lol

So I guess while I'm at it.......when they sense knock, do they tell the ECM to mess with the ignition timing as an attempt to elminate the knock?

Please don't delete this thread.

We can't learn if we don't ask questions. Even if we feel they're stupid questions.

Plus the next guy who needs to know what these are may be able to use your thread to find the answer to his questions.

I say, "**** YEAH!" to asking stupid questions.

AWESOME!!!

Not only did that explain how to get them out really well.........I never knew about any PCV design issues with these engines. So I'm guessing that is why there is a TON of oil/buildup/gunk on the inside of my intake ports and intake valves. I thought it looked really really heavy last night and guessed it could have been something wrong with my PCV system, or something worse.

After seeing this conversion, I'm guessing that the PCV arrangement is what caused the buildup.

Thanks for the help
