What is a THICKER 30w oil? (Not a BEST thread)!
All I want to know is what 30w oil is on the "heavier side" more like a 40w?
I currently run Mobile 1 5w30 like everyone else, but I can tell this 30w is thinner than most other synthetic 30w (as most say is true on this forum.)
So what other easily and readily available synthetics out there in a 5w30 weight are truly a 30w or a bit higher oil?
A couple friends recommended Pennzoil Platinum?
I don't really care what is "best" because 1) it's the one topic no one can agree on here and 2) I believe most all respectable synthetics out there do the job perfectly fine.
I just want the weight ratings to be accurate.
Thanks!

Ok I will. I'll add a second question to this:
Should I choose something that is a 40w? Like a 0 / 5 / 10 w40?
People just tell me LS1's tend to prefer the slightly heavier weight, especially compared to the light 5w30 M1 oil.
Weather here is pretty mild (both winters and summer)

I know and use Amsoil 0w30, and it is a higher 30w oil closer to a 40 weight but is in spec with the 30w. I just know when its cold it has great pumpabilty compared to a 10w30. And that is my reason i use the 0w30. Otherwise i just a little thicker 30wt. Check it out, As far a 40w i wouldnt use it just to thick for a ls motor. Just makes oil temps go up and parts not getting lube on time do to it not flowing as well.

Yea after much reading on "Bobistheoilguy" specifically for LS1 engines, it seems Redline 5w30 works great with little sheer down. This is ok with me for the price as it seems to be a legit 5w30 with good characteristics and the car is now my weekend warrior since I got a second car (thus less frequent oil changes).

Alright everyone, they almighty German Castrol 0w30 that is highly recommended for our LS1 engines (with data to back it up, which is nice and a reason why it's popular) is NO WHERE to be found in the area I live.
This is the only place online I found that sells it:
http://matrixsyntheticoils.com/store...0w-30.html#401
Does this look legit? If so I'll order 2 cases.

They always carry german castrol at my autozones around town, all of them, I personally tried it, and it makes my engine far too noisy, and it's far over priced. So I use pennzoil platinum 10w-30, and 5w-30 for winter. Might try pennzoil ultra next time, and my motor isn't noisy at all anymore ( aka piston slap ) another thing I noticed, is the pennzoil stuff smells good? while most other oils have that "oil smell" to them, I can't believe I just admitted to smelling oil, haha.
If i were you, I'd just use PP 10w-30.

Autozone around here has German Castrol and it is currently on sale. I know that does't do you much good though. Check the viscosity at 100 degrees C, that will let you know which oils are where in the 30 weight scale. I think the GC is 12.3 Cst, close to a 40. I used to use Amsoil but it always thickened to a 40 weight every change so I stopped using it. They have since reformulated and it stays in weight better but the viscosity is about the same as Mobil-1 last time I checked. Redline is another good choice. If prices are the same, I would personally go with the Redline.
