Default valve spring swap, quick tool question

i'm getting ready to change my rockers and valve springs and i think i'm just going to use a leverage type compressor and whack the handle off. but some members say that i could break a bolt off using this method. instead i was thinking about using a "stud" instead of a bolt to fasten the tool to the head. then i could just run a nut down on the stud to do the compressing. i read where the thread size is 8mm X 1.25, but what length stud should i get for the job? i'm going to try to find a fastener shop that can get me one with a 10.9 hardness factor.

thanks in advance...
