Default What's the difference TR220 vs CC220/220

What is the difference between a TR220 cam and a Comp Cam 220/220 .563/.563 on a 114 grind?

Are the lobes different?

Thanks

Yes. The lobes are very different from the the Comp XE lobes. They are similar to the XE-R lobes, but not the same as those either.
And pi$$ on everyone who tells you otherwise. Thunder Racing does not use any lobe that Comp Cams does. Similar is not the same.

The TR cam will idle better and make more power than the Comp Cams version. Plus the customer service is excellent!

yeah, the thunder cam has more aggresive ramps like the xe-r cams while the one you are talking about is an xe cam. thunders cams are just a little easier on the lift side of it compared to the xe-r's.

What about between different companies? For instance, what's the difference between a 224 cam from Thunder Racing, one from LS1 Speed, and one from Texas Speed? Wouldn't they all perform right around the same since they all use the same specs (according to their websites)?

You really can't compare cams by the advertised numbers...there is a TON of info on this that you can access by using the "Search" feature.

For example:
Thunder Racing 224/224 .561/.561 112
Comp Cams 224/224 .563/.563 112
Both durations measured at .050" of lobe lift
At .006" of lobe lift the TR cam has a duration of 230 or whatever...I don't know what it is, so I am just using that as an example. The Comp Cams has a duration of about 240 or whatever. These two numbers are very different and have a lot to do with the ramp rate of the lobe and the area under the curve of the lobe.

Thee two cams look almost identical as posted above. But they are very different cams. It all has to do with how fast the lobe on the cam reaches peak lift, how long it stays there, and when the valve opening and closing events take place. I won't get into specifics, use the search feature to find posts on cams...read and learn
TR cams have proven themselves...you can't go wrong with the TR 220 or the 224. They are both excellent all around cams.
I believe Texas-Speed uses Comps lobes for a lot of their cams...some folks use Lunati lobes...like MTI T1 and B1 cams. A lot of tuners use their own research and proprietary lobe design...they just have them ground by another shop.
You need to research before choosing the cam that is right for you...take a few weeks to read up and learn about them. This board is a wealth of knowledge.
