talking about the re-grind cams?

avoid them like the plague, cam lobes are hardened...cutting them down to make new lobe profiles can get into softer metal prone to failure

you can get good used cams for sale in the market section for $200,sometimes less

Camshafts can be reground there are businesses all over that specialize in just that. In fact most of your cam companies will regrind for you also call them and ask. We have had flat tappet cams reground for decades and actually get higher quality work then the cookie cutters. The OEM billet cams are heat treated through and hardened then tempered back to a specific hardness. Should be no issues. Some aftermarket billets are of lower quality materials than OEM and are case hardened. They are also case hardened for abusive load/ and more wear resistance such as solid rollers. You can run a regroud cam! I build Antique performance engines , there are only 2 choices new billet(custom made one off) or reground 95% are reground. These engines are up to 30K$ there are no shortcuts in a 30K$ engine and it has a reground, when there is nothing else available you rework/remanufacture the existing part to the specs. needed.

we see 2 major problems with these cams

1-the cam lobe isn't designed and or ground wrong, this leads to valvetrain instability and failure

2-the lobes aren't in the correct positions. While number 1 lobes might be close to where they belong in relation to the dowel pin, alot of the other lobes can be way off. This generally leads to poor performance due to each cylinder having different cam timing.

There are compaines that do poor work all around, that does not make all that do that work produce poor quality. I have had customers bring in poor quality regrinds that were a waste of money, Issues just like you mention, But I have a regrinder that can control each lobe with in .001. I had a cam from a fly by night that was out .020 in the base and was a solid cam. THat won't work. Its about how the work is performed .

I got a regrind from Delta cams, They explained about the hardening process on the oem cams that it is hardened all the way through , they have been doing it for 40 years. $112.50 for a regrind. I figure why not. My car is not together yet, will be by spring, we will see.

THe funny thing about reading some of these statements, Don't people realize that cam grinder CNC or manual copy its the same machine that makes new cams!

I know my grandpa used to always use re-grinds in all his dirt track motors. Never any problems and that's usually 6k+rpm the whole race.

^^Search "regrind cam plano texas" on google. Then filter it to "discussions" on the left side.

Lots and lots of bad reviews on a variety of different forums.

Here's a good idea. Get a regrind from a trusted source. IE: NOT EBAY. I will pay for a new cam everytime, because that is what I have always done. Yeah, sure a regrind will work. Usually when someone has an engine failure and reveal the fact that they ran a reground cam, thats when its blamed for discussion sake. It could have been something else or just abused.

Just do your research. Many sponsors here offer packages that include everything you need for a cam swap. I would much rather spend with them because they keep this site funded. Without them, we wouldnt be here.

2 regrind failures come to mind. One in here where a guy had his reground to the specs of either an MS3 or Torquer V3, destroyed his motor after 500 miles. And in the LT1 section guy that ran a regrind just broke a bunch of good quality topend parts.
