Default LS-1 383 build opinions?

I have been thinking of doing a stroker motor with my LS-1. I have been told that it is a waste of money because of the bore. I am building carb setup for this engine. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Definitely not a waste of time. More power and torque.

i have one and it makes really good power. i know with a better tune i would be a lot closer to the 500rwhp mark. if you dont wanna buy a block its the only way to go IMO. there's a few guys that have 4.100 inch stroke crank making theirs 396's. i think the wrist pin starts getting into the ring lands though. PM me if you have any questions about my set up.

I ran one for a year. Best time was 10.42. That was with afr 225's, vic jr intake, 750 dp carb and a decent size cam 4.11 gears. A friend of mine had a little more suspension on his car and it was a little lighter. He was running a 346, stock heads, stock block, fast intake and a big cam. His best time was 10.38. I had 85 more cfm 37 more cu. in. and was slower. both had the same gearing and similar stall. I pulled one more mph then him. They have a lot of piston scuff.

not a waste but i would rather build a 370 6.0l with forged rods and pistons and invest the money saved on the crank on a better set of heads that will utilize the 4" bore. It should walk on the 383 and have more room to grow.

i just did a quick search and found a few threads on this. search for 396 or 396 ls1. i had put an engine in my buddies truck that he sucked full of water. if one of the rods hadnt hit the block just above the oil filter i would probably have a 402 now. but i enjoy my 383. just saving some money to spray the **** outta it.

X2 I wanna know too. After I read a few thread here about 396, there's 2 things bothering me; 1) oil consumption, 2) RPM range affected by bore vs stroke ratio

Which one you guys will recommend?

346cid with aftermarket high flow head; or
383cid with stock casting port head.

Both equip with same mild cam like a 224R and FAST 90/90

At the end of the day there's no replacement for displacement. Mod for mod the larger motor will always make more power.

I am using a set of ported heads with mine. So the 396 has oil consumption problems?

I have the 224R, untouched FAST 90/90, and untouched AFR 205's that i bought used for a reasonable price. This is untuned so im not sure on the hp. I would guess around 430rwhp, but like I said that is just a guess. And fwiw I have managed to have more than enough fun with my setup. Maybe this will help with your decision.

I'd go with the 383ci. You can still make a lot of power with a small 3.90" bore; its not as limiting as many people think. Especially when we're talking about using hydraulic roller lifters.

Tony @ AFR has/had a good example of a well built 383ci LS1 in his C5 Vette that, if I remember correctly, made close to 600whp on pump gas.

Also, I know its apples to oranges, but there is a 3.950" bore late model HEMI that just recently made over 700bhp with a 4.250" stroke crank in the EMC, and I think that was accomplished while turning under 6500 RPM or so.

That's fast. I wanna keep my driver's license valid

My friend keep telling me go with a 383 stroke with my build instead of just a forged 346.

You didn't mention forging earlier. If you are going to go to the trouble of replacing your rotating assembly with forged internals I would definitely go for the added displacement. It'll be a little extra coin but it will be worth it in the end. I was just showing what you can do with a stock bottom end and the mods you mentioned.

I had every intention of keeping the original block and doing a forged 383 build, but I have decided to go with a little more displacement in my plans when I get back from Afghanistan.

Any of the newer pistons with coatings are going to help with the scuff of the longer stroke. My 383 looked great at its 10k teardown running Wiesco coated pistons @ 488whp. The key here is getting your piston to wall clearence nice and tight to keep the pistons from rocking as much. Having the motor set up @ zero deck or .005 out of the hole will keep the scuff to a min as well. I wouldn't trade the extra torque I'm making now vs my old stock displacement setup for anything.

I'm at the point now where I'm strongly considering a rebuild. I'm trying to decide between building my own motor using the stock block and doing a 383 or buying 402 off one of the vendors. If there is a good cost savings by building it myself then I'll go that route. Plus, I've always wanted to build my own motor.
